QUESTION POSED ON: 18 January 2008
I recently was laid off and am having trouble finding employment in my chosen field. I was considering a switch to IT technology, specifically database administration or development. Short of going back to school for two years, what is the best way to educate myself and acquire the skills I need to get hired? Should I focus on Oracle or SQL? What, in your opinion, is there a greater demand for in the workplace?

EXPERT RESPONSE
It really depends on your location. SQL Server is a very hot market in some areas, but overall Oracle has the bigger share of the market. I would suggest learning relational database concepts first and SQL (Structured Query Language) first. Then focus on SQL Server or Oracle.
